Where history meets modernity: 10 years of the KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo Leipzig
Ten years ago, the KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo Leipzig opened its doors as a modern conference centre in a historic setting. The venue quickly established itself on the market and attracted new event organisers to Leipzig. Its success is rooted in the uniqueness of the building and the expertise of its team. As a Leipziger Messe venue, the KONGRESSHALLE is operated by the team behind the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL). While the CCL at the exhibition grounds is one of the most modern congress centres in Europe, the KONGRESSHALLE complements Leipziger Messe’s congress portfolio with a historic venue in a central city location.
Looking back: From social hall to conference venue
The KONGRESSHALLE opened in 1900 as the “Gesellschaftshaus am Zoo”. It quickly became a popular venue for cultural events, celebrations and exhibitions. The building survived the Second World War largely unscathed and, after 1945, was converted into the “Kongreßhalle”. It subsequently hosted trade fairs, congresses and cultural events alike. From 1947 to 1981, for example, the world-renowned Gewandhaus Orchestra performed here before moving to the new Gewandhaus at Augustusplatz. Following a fire in 1988, the building was closed. In 2009, the City of Leipzig and Zoo Leipzig, as the owners, decided to refurbish and redevelop the site. Leipziger Messe and the CCL contributed their expertise in all aspects required for a modern conference centre.
New space for Leipzig’s growing conference sector
The timing was ideal: by the mid-2000s, the CCL at the exhibition grounds in northern Leipzig was already operating at very high capacity and could no longer accommodate all event enquiries. This raised the question of creating additional space for conferences and congresses in Leipzig. Following refurbishment and redevelopment, Leipziger Messe – together with the CCL – took over the lease and operation of the KONGRESSHALLE. For many organisers who had previously been unable to find suitable venues in Leipzig, appropriate capacity for conferences and business events was now available. This resulted in a significant expansion of the city’s conference infrastructure and provided a strong boost to Leipzig as a conference destination.Demand and booking levels were high from the outset. This was due in particular to the experience, service quality and strong reputation of the CCL. “We were always able to say: you know the CCL and our level of service – and you’ll find exactly the same at the KONGRESSHALLE. That meant we didn’t need a settling-in period,” explains André Kaldenhoff, Executive Director for Congresses at Leipziger Messe. “We were still showing the building to our first clients while it was under construction. They took one look and asked: ‘Where do we sign?’ That’s when we knew it was going to work.” Even during a pre-opening phase from September to December 2015, more than 30 events were held.
What sets the KONGRESSHALLE apart: capacity, architecture, technology and location
The venue impresses organisers across the board: with flexible, combinable spaces and striking architecture, state-of-the-art technical equipment, and a central location close to the city centre and right next to Zoo Leipzig.
Ideal space for complex conferences and business events
The KONGRESSHALLE offers ideal conditions for two- to three-day conferences with 600 to 800 participants, featuring a plenary session, workshops, break-out sessions, exhibition space and catering. The venue is also the perfect backdrop for business events with a strong focus on networking and catering. The Great Hall accommodates up to 1,200 guests in theatre-style seating. The venue offers 15 halls and rooms that can be configured to suit different event formats. The Gründer Garden adds an attractive outdoor area. Conference planners benefit from this compact spatial layout when scheduling their programmes.
Historic architecture for modern conferences in Leipzig
The rooms at the KONGRESSHALLE are not only functional. They also boast impressive architectural diversity. The building combines elements of the Wilhelminian era, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and contemporary interpretations of its historic structure. Highlights include the Art Nouveau staircase in the Wandelhalle, the White Hall in 1925 Art Deco style, the impressive Great Hall with its stucco detailing, and the Telemann Hall with its modern column design. The architecture lends each event a distinctive character and creates an atmospheric setting for business events and receptions.

State-of-the-art technology in a historic building
“This was the greatest challenge for the planners and architects when redeveloping the KONGRESSHALLE,” says André Kaldenhoff. The historic building has been carefully transformed into a modern conference centre. Today, it meets all the technical requirements of contemporary conferences.
Short distances: sustainable synergies for travel and supporting programmes
A key advantage of the KONGRESSHALLE is its central location. Guests can reach the venue on foot from many hotels in Leipzig’s city centre. Trams stop directly outside the entrance. After the event, participants can easily access Leipzig’s wide range of leisure, cultural and dining options.Another highlight is its immediate proximity to Zoo Leipzig. This combination is particularly attractive for conference planners. Without the need for long transfers, participants can walk straight from the conference to evening programmes or side events – whether to the Gondwanaland tropical experience hall, Hacienda Las Casas or the Kiwara Lodge. This allows organisers to create varied and memorable experiences within a compact area.
Sustainability – from mobility to catering
As a Leipziger Messe venue, the KONGRESSHALLE reflects the guiding principle of Growth in Balance, which defines the group’s commitment to corporate responsibility and sustainability. For the team, sustainability starts with treating the listed building with care and planning events responsibly. The central location also supports climate-friendly travel. In its catering, the KONGRESSHALLE consistently prioritises sustainable practices.fairgourmet is the exclusive catering partner. The company has been developing sustainable practices for many years and holds GreenSign Gastro certification. This makes the venue equally well suited to organisers with a strong focus on sustainability and to green events in Leipzig.
The conference sector today: compact scheduling and the highest technical standards
Since the KONGRESSHALLE opened ten years ago, the conference sector has evolved rapidly. “Events have become more tightly scheduled,” says André Kaldenhoff. Set-up, event duration and dismantling are now strictly coordinated. At the same time, exhibitions have become more demanding. Almost all exhibitors now opt for custom-built stands, whereas just a few years ago many were content with a roll-up banner and a table.
The technical side of events most clearly illustrates how the conference sector has changed over the past decade. “Event planners are putting more thought into how they can create incentives for participants to attend in person and offer more than what could just as easily be delivered digitally. Corporate events have become complex productions with a strong immersive character,” says André Kaldenhoff. The KONGRESSHALLE meets all these requirements of modern conferences and business events. For more specialised needs, the team relies on a strong network of service partners.
Conferences in Leipzig as a centre of science
The KONGRESSHALLE has become a key venue for conferences in Leipzig as a centre of science. National and international professional associations hold their annual conferences here, combining their programmes with excursions and side events at research institutions in Leipzig. Local stakeholders from academia and industry welcome colleagues from around the world to conferences in the city.
Thanks to its proximity to Zoo Leipzig, the KONGRESSHALLE has established itself as a popular venue for conferences focusing on biodiversity, environmental and species conservation, sustainability, and zoo-related topics. In 2022, it hosted the annual conference of German zoo directors, followed in 2024 by the annual conference of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). Conference sessions and hands-on examples at Zoo Leipzig were just a short walk apart.
In this way, the KONGRESSHALLE has played a key role in strengthening the international visibility of Leipzig as a centre of science over the past decade.
A milestone of global standing: “125 years of the DFB” in 2025
One milestone in the KONGRESSHALLE’s event calendar was the “125 years of the DFB” anniversary. In 2025, the German Football Association (DFB), founded in 1900, celebrated this anniversary in the place where it all began: Leipzig. “The celebrations were a world-class event,” says André Kaldenhoff. Among those attending was a who’s who of politics and international football.
Once again, the venue proved its suitability for events with the highest security requirements. It has previously hosted the Conference of Interior Ministers, the Conference of Minister Presidents, as well as receptions attended by the Federal President and international government representatives. To ensure smooth delivery, the KONGRESSHALLE team works closely with Leipziger Messe’s protocol team and the relevant security authorities.
Outlook: Highlights at the KONGRESSHALLE in 2026

Current enquiries already extend well beyond 2030.
