Sustainable mobility for your conference: Leipzig makes it possible

Top highlight
Optimal connections, a forward-looking mobility strategy, modern infrastructure for multimodal transport and sustainably minded venues – Leipzig offers ideal conditions for climate-friendly mobility at your conferences, congresses and incentives. From getting there to on-site services, your delegates have a wide range of options for getting around Leipzig in an environmentally friendly and resource-efficient way.

Sustainable travel to your conference in Leipzig

Central location and convenient access by train, S-Bahn and coach

Thanks to its central location in Germany and Europe, Leipzig is easy to reach in many ways – and all with a low environmental impact.
The main gateway to the city is Leipzig Central Station, one of the busiest long-distance railway hubs in the Deutsche Bahn network. Countless train connections bring you right into the city centre. Leipzig has direct ICE services linking it to major German cities such as Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt am Main and Munich. At the same time, Leipzig Central Station is the main hub of the Central German S-Bahn network, ensuring a relaxed journey from across the region.

National coach services and international routes from across Europe also arrive at the long-distance bus terminal at Leipzig Central Station.

If you land at Leipzig/Halle Airport, the S-Bahn will take you to Leipzig Central Station in just 12 minutes. From there, you can switch easily to a wide range of onward mobility options. Many conference hotels and venues in the city centre are just a short walk away.

Sustainable mobility strategy: Leipzig’s ideas for a growing city

Focus on walking, cycling and public transport

Population growth, commuter flows, commercial traffic and rising visitor numbers: more and more people are on the move in Leipzig. But how they get from A to B is not something the city leaves to chance. Promising concepts have been developed to manage increasing traffic within limited public space, first and foremost the Leipzig Mobility Strategy 2030. At its heart: quality of life in the city, mobility on foot, by bike, by train, tram and bus, as well as alternatives to the car.
The goal: full participation for all road users, equal mobility opportunities and reduced air and noise pollution. Your conference delegates benefit from this sustainable, strategic approach just as much as Leipzig’s residents.

With these measures, Leipzig aims to make mobility even more climate-friendly:
  • Expansion and improvement of cycling and walking infrastructure
  • Demand-oriented expansion of local public transport
  • Innovative transport network concepts such as car sharing
  • Less private car use, more public transport instead
  • More inter- and multimodality, along with active promotion of eco-friendly modes of transport

On foot or by bike – a relaxed way to reach your conference venue

Leipzig is a bike-friendly city and plans to give cyclists even more space in the future. New, wider and safer cycle paths, along with more parking facilities, are strong incentives to switch to cycling. This benefits not only the many Leipzig residents who use their bikes for everyday journeys. For their trip to the conference venue or an excursion afterwards, your participants can hire bicycles from nextbike or rent e-bikes.

At the same time, Leipzig is investing in attractive conditions for pedestrians – with great success. In 2025, the German Pedestrian Association (FUSS e.V.) and the Association of German Cities awarded Leipzig the “German Pedestrian Prize”. The city convinced the jury with a wide range of measures to improve safety and reduce barriers for pedestrians. In the city centre especially, motorised traffic has long been kept to a minimum. Here, the motto is “More space for people”.
Your conference guests will experience this extra quality of life first-hand – whether enjoying the unique atmosphere on their way to the venue or setting off to
explore the city on foot.

Sustainable travel by public transport

Public transport is also a key element of Leipzig’s sustainable mobility strategy. With 13 tram lines and 48 bus routes, the LVB public transport authority serves almost 2,000 stops across the city. The tram fleet runs on green electricity and energy-efficient drive and air-conditioning technology. On six routes, 38 electric buses are in service – all powered by green electricity.

Our tip: With the Leipzig congress ticket, you can make it even easier for your participants to use trams, buses and the S-Bahn during the event. Their conference badge doubles as a travel pass, allowing them to move effortlessly between their hotel, venues, social programme locations and leisure activities.

All mobility options at a glance: The Leipzig MOVE app

A practical travel companion, the Leipzig MOVE app gives you an instant overview of current timetables and mobility options. It also shows you the best route to your next destination. With just a few clicks, you can load tickets onto your smartphone, book hire bikes and e-scooters or order a taxi.

Orientation for greater flexibility: Mobility stations

LVB has created a network of mobility stations to help people find their way around more easily. These yellow-and-blue pillars mark spaces for car sharing, cycle parking, e-charging stations and designated areas for e-scooters. The mobility stations act as interfaces between public transport and other mobility options – giving your delegates even greater flexibility!

P.S. The LVB public transport authority takes sustainability even further: around 875 passenger shelters are already equipped with solar panels or green roofs – and the number is still rising.

Even more sustainable options for individual mobility

Car sharing around the clock

Would you like to use a car and still travel in a climate-friendly way? Then consider taking advantage of cityflitzer’s free-floating car sharing scheme. The vehicles are not tied to fixed stations – you can check the current location of an available car at any time via the app or website. This shared use of the fleet saves resources and reduces the number of private cars in the city. With this modern form of car sharing, your conference guests can move around the city freely and spontaneously, at any time of day or night.

Sustainable travel to Leipzig venues

Optimal connections and modern infrastructure for visitor comfort

Leipzig’s conference hotels and venues support sustainable mobility in many ways. Many establishments in and around the city centre are within easy walking distance. Other venues are conveniently accessible by public transport. In addition, charging facilities for electric vehicles are standard at most hotels. At venues such as the Congress Center Leipzig, the QUARTERBACK Immobilien ARENA and media city leipzig, you will find e-charging stations and can use your stay to recharge. The Leipziger Messe exhibition grounds and Zoo Leipzig also provide charging stations for e-bikes. A growing number of charging points for electric vehicles are available across the city.

Sustainable mobility on the conference agenda

Leipzig’s inspiring contributions to the mobility of the future

Sustainable and innovative mobility is a central theme of the Annual Summit of the International Transport Forum (ITF). Since 2008, the world’s leading conference on transport and logistics has been held at the Congress Center Leipzig, welcoming international transport policy-makers along with representatives from business, science and civil society each year. In addition to renowned keynote speakers, Leipzig as the host city also contributes valuable forward-looking ideas to the International Transport Forum. As part of dedicated Technical Tours, for instance, the BMW and Porsche plants provide on-site insights into innovative processes. Both are major production sites for electric vehicles and give the international audience a first-hand look at the latest developments.

A conference all about cycling: Velo-city Leipzig

In 2023, Leipzig hosted Velo-city, the world’s largest summit dedicated to cycling. City representatives, political and business leaders, researchers and associations from across the globe came together to share knowledge and exchange ideas on forward-looking mobility solutions, urban cycling infrastructure and transport policy. Leipzig’s own visions for cycling were a key factor in the choice of venue. During the conference, the 1,500 delegates from more than 60 countries demonstrated how well mobility by bike can be integrated into a conference programme. Want to find out more? Look forward to inspiring ideas for your own conference in Leipzig.
